Crocodile Stitch

Crocodile Stitch

The first set of instructions assumes that the project is a circle (for purse, gloves, shirt), so connect row with slip stitch (ss) being careful not to twist ch.

To determine width of project, chain (ch) in groups of 7.

Row 1:

(setup for scales) Ch 3 (counts as double crochet (dc) throughout). Dc in each ch across, joining with ss to top of ch 3.

Row 2:

(scales) Ch 1, work 5 dc down post of first dc (first ch 3), ch 1, work 5 dc up post of 2nd dc of previous round (first scale made). Skip next 5 dc. * work 5 dc down post of next dc of previous round. Ch 1, work 5 dc up post of next dc of previous round (next scale made). Skip next 5 dc *. Continue from * to *, joining last stitch (st) with ss to ch 1.

Row 3:

(setup for scales) Ss into 3rd dc of next missed 5-dc group of previous round. Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as last ss. * 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. 1 dc between 2 dc of scale. 1 dc in each of next 2 dc **. 2 dc in next dc*. Continue from * to * ending row with * to **, join last st with ss to ch 3.

Repeat Row 2 and 3, ending with Row 2 for length of project.

Assuming project is flat
(blanket)

To determine width of project, chain (ch) in groups of 5 plus 3 ch (counts as dc throughout).

Row 1:

(setup for scales) In 6th ch from hook (last 3 count as 1st dc and ch 1), (dc, ch 1, dc) in 4th ch from hook, *skip next ch, ch 1, dc in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch *, continuing from * to * across ending with dc in last st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:

(scales) Work 5 dc down post of second dc, ch 1, work 5 dc up post of third dc, * sc in next dc, ch 1. Using next 2 (V), work 5 dc down, ch 1, work 5 dc up * continuing from * to * to last dc, connecting with sc. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3:

(setup) * Dc in middle space of crocodile stitch to secure, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in sc between crocodile stitches, ch 1 *, continuing across with dc in last st of row. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 and 3, ending with Row 2 for length of project.

To add scale for each row (shawl)

End each setup row with (dc, ch 1, dc) with scale row using these as beginning and ending scales.
